WHILE thousands of Gold Coast families face long waits for public housing, hundreds of singles are living in multiple-bedroom houses.
To make matters worse, many are illegally renting out the spare rooms, with a government blitz uncovering 2300 illegal tenants who now have to pay a combined $5 million in rent annually.
The State Government said yesterday there were 542 public housing facilities with two or more bedrooms but only one occupier.
Figures obtained by the Bulletin show there are almost 3000 families and individuals waiting for a place in one of the 4835 housing units owned by the Department of Housing and Public works on the Coast.
Housing Minister Bruce Flegg said the state had identified tenants who were rorting the system by sub-letting rooms.
